APPENDIX IV: GENERAL GUIDELINES ON PATIENT ELIGIBILITY FOR AMBULATORY SURGERY BASED ON MEDICAL CONDITION 1 . Society of Anesthesiologists Classification of Risk Class 1: There is no physiologic, biochemical, or psychiatric disturbance. The pathological process for which operation is to be performed is localized and not conducive to systemic disturbance. Examples: A fit patient with inguinal hernia; fibroid uterus in an otherwise healthy woman. Class 2: Mild to moderate systemic disturbance caused either by the condition to be treated surgically or by other pathophysiological processes. Examples: Presence of mild diabetes, essential hypertension, or anemia. Examples: Severe diabetes with vascular complications; moderate to severe degrees of pulmonary insufficiency, angina pectoris or healed myocardial infarction. Some Class 3 may be candidates for anesthesia at PPC if: a. The medical problems are stable, well controlled by medicines. b. No recent myocardial infarction or unstable cardiac disease. C.
